Birch

Birches (Betula) are the most common deciduous trees in Finland. Downy birch (Betula pubescens) thrives in moist areas, whereas Silver birch (Betula pendula) needs plenty of light and does best on dry soils. Dwarf birch (Betula nana) is commonly found on peatlands and the Curly birch (Betula pendula var. carelica) is known for the beautiful and decorative patterns of its wood.
